Laurel Love Cocoon

Laurel Love Cocoon
This pattern is for personal, charity, and WAHM use. WAHM’s are welcome to sell items made from this pattern, all I ask in return is for credit for the pattern with a link back to my site http://www.laurellove.com/
(Example credit: This cocoon was knit using the Laurel Love Cocoon pattern. http://www.laurellove.com )

If you have a question about this pattern please email me at laurelloveboutique@gmail.com
*** Pattern Updated 2/27***
FO should measure approx 8in. wide and 13.5-14in. long
Size: Newborn
Gage: approximately 2.5 stitches per inch (10 stitches = 4 inches)
Yarn: 1.5 skeins or approx. 100 yards of Super Bulky - I used Aquarella Malabrigo
Materials Needed:
40” US13 knitting needle
embroidery needle
tape measure
stitch marker

This cocoon is knit in the round using the Magic Loop technique. If you are not familiar with it www.knittinghelp.com has a great video tutorial on it. Of course double point needles would work just as well.

Cast on 40 stitches. Join in the round, place marker and begin knitting in stockinette stitch. Continue knitting in stockinette stitch until knitted piece measures 12 inches in length. Follow decrease sequence. End by running a 6” tail of yarn through remaining 8 stitches. Weave in ends. I did not wash nor block my cocoon as I wanted it to retain the “puffy” yarn look instead of the flatter more uniform look of a washed/blocked garment. Gently place newborn in cocoon and cuddle. Don’t forget to snap a few pictures for everyone to swoon over. <3

Decrease sequence
R1: *K8, K2tog, repeat around from* (36 stitches remain)
R2: K all stitches
R3: *K7, K2tog, repeat around from* (32 stitches remain)
R4: K all stitches
R5: *K6, K2tog, repeat around from* (28 stitches remain)
R6: *K5, K2tog, repeat around from* (24 stitches remain)
R7: *K4, K2tog, repeat around from* (20 stitches remain)
R8: *K3, K2tog, repeat around from* (16 stitches remain)
R9: *K2, K2tog, repeat around from* (12 stitches remain)
R10: K all stitches
R11: K2tog around (6 stitches remain)
R12: cut 6” tail to weave through eight remaining stitches.

Enjoy!

  6. Just wanted to say that I love your permission to allow WAHMs to use this to sell. Clever idea. I never put the disclaimer not to make money off of my patterns because I wanted people like that to be able to use them (especially kids).

Also, this little cocoon is fabulous. I want someone to have a baby so I have a reason to make one. (I'm not an expert knitter, but I bet I could pull this off.)

  9. That is so sweet. Thanks much for a great baby shower gift idea :-D. A couple of these (extras for changing/washing) would surely be welcome for a winter baby or any baby in winter.

  14. Will I need DPN's to complete this?

    ReplyDelete
  15. You're welcome and thank you everyone! <3

PS, WAHM = "Work At Home Mom"

Mama Llama, Yes! DPN's would work fine. I prefer to magic loop so that is what I included in the instructions.

  17. FYI there are the round hat looms that I think would work great (in the appropriate size) I have use the extra small ones when making hats for sewing for babies... I think I may borrow a larger loom to try it out.
Love the idea. Thanks for the tutorial.

(The round Loom may make it easier for the younger less experienced knitter to figure out)

  21. My hubby knits (I don't even know how, haha) but he used this pattern to make a cocoon for our second baby! I just LOVE it, so thanks for sharing! The only thing I don't like is that I chose a variegated yarn and the dye pattern ended up making horizontal stripes on our cocoon. It's still really cute though!

  22. Thank you for Posting this! I can't wait to get started on this for our little boy who is due in July. This will be my first project knitting in the round.

I have had a lot of requests for an item like this, but I stink at writing patterns of my own. I will be sure to give you credit when I list any of these! Thank you again!

  28. Absolutely lovely! This is exactly what I have been looking for. Thank you for sharing. (found it on ravelry <3!)

Though, I have one question: Is it possible to add a hood on, for those extra chilly nights? Is that still acceptable? I'd hate to render such a charming piece useless by adding extra "fluff".

    Thank you kindly.
    Best to all,
    JLM

  29. I made this and the length measures about 15 inches. . .is that really long enough for a newborn? Is this a preemie pattern? I don't have my baby yet to try it out on her, so I'm just curious if it's going to be long enough?!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yes, 15" should be plenty long enough for a newborn. Newborns curl up easily. The newborn (actually 10 days old) I used in my pictures was average sized (8/8.5lbs ish) and I when I slipped him in it and he curled right up into it.

  31. my aunt just found out she is expecting and this will be my first major knitting project (ive only successfully made scarves!).

i cant find a 40" size 13 circular needle. can i use a 36" circular? i just want to make sure i dont mess it up before i start!

  37. This is sooooo adorable! I'm getting ready to knit it for a friend's baby, but I have a few questions. Did you purl the first few rounds, or is it just turned down in the picture? Aaaand, I've forgotten my other question, so I'll have to come back when I remember what it was!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Just finished my cocoon!! And I linked back to your blog in mine! Thanks!

  39. I've just learned how to kinit and I chose this as my first real project. I hope I'm not being too ambitious. I'm expecting my third baby, a boy, in June. So since it's in the round, to do stockinette stitch you just do the knit stitch the whole time, with the magic loop technique, not purl right? And I could only find 36" needles, do you think that's ok? Thanks for your help!

  41. what size needles would i need to use in the UK? I love this pattern and really want to make one:) I've never knitted in the round before but this seems so simple.

is 40inches the right size for the length of the needles tho? or do you mean 40cm?

hope you can help thanks for a great pattern.

  42. I love this but I don't knit--any idea where I can find a crochet version? Or a pattern for a round peg loom?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I was a little frustrated cuz you said to buy a 40 " long needle which is wayyyy to long to of a circular needle for this pattern. Might want to have all the correct info on here.

    ReplyDelete
  44. With the Magic Loop method used in this pattern, you would use a 40 inch circular needle. Magic Loop requires an extra long circular, but you can knit nearly any size item on just that length, so there's no need for multiple lengths of the same size needle.

Powerful Herbal treatment is 100% guarantee for HSV cure, the reason why most people are finding it difficult to cure HSV 1 or 2 is because they believe on medical report, drugs and medical treatments which is not helpful to cure HSV and hasnít proved any sign of helping. Natural roots/herbs are the best remedy which can easily eradicate herpes forever. I never believed it until I was helped and cured of my 16 months genital herpes with natural herbal medicines from Dr Aza. I want to inform the public how I was cured of herpes simplex Virus by a herbal Dr called ISHIAKU. I visited different hospitals but they gave me a list of drugs like Famvir, Zovirax, and Valtrex which are very expensive to treat the symptoms and never cured me. When I contacted him he gave me hope and sent a Herbal medicine to me that I took and it seriously worked for me, am a free person now without any problems, my HERPES result came out negative. You can contact him on his what - sapp him via (+2348180828544) or email ishiakuherbalcure@yahoo.com and get all your problems solved.
